Ahh yes, nice book. I find the people who take it a little too seriously to be pretty funny.

Can't wait for the movie, Tom Hanks fits the role perfectly.

Da Vinci Code

Everyone says that it's a good book. I haven't read it and I don't really plan on doing so. I was watching a news segment or a special about it, where they mentioned a few things about the book that just seemed so stupid. For example, in Da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper"; if you trace a path starting from Jesus' head, down his arm and along the person to his right, it makes a "V". This "V" is symbolic for "feminine", specifically, Mary Magdalene. Supposedly, one of Dan Brown's claims is that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and the Church tried to hide this. Wow, talk about looking for things that aren't really there. Man, good thing he caught that "V" in the painting. I know that the book is fiction, but that is just mindless even for fiction. How is finding a "V" translate to good writing? I just think that finding enjoyment out of something like that is worse than those people who do take the book seriously.

Moreover, it just seems like he had some sort of agenda from what I saw. He criticizes the book of Genesis and aligns it with Christian philosophy when the book of Genesis was exclusively a Jewish book for the first fifteen hundred years before it became Christian philosophy. It was written by the Jews for the Jews. I dunno... it just seemed really dumb to me to have some sort of agenda to put down Christianity or the Church in a fictional book. I like the conspiracy theory about how we really didn't land on the moon much better.

Not everyone says it's a good book, there are a large majority of people that dislike it. Dan Brown didn't make up the part about Jesus being married to Mary Magdalene. It was already a well known theory that had already been exploited publicly such as in in the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" starring Willem Dafoe. The thing that makes the book so good, is how he hits areas that most people wouldn't touch. He does to say that Christ did have a wife and that things weren't the way we thought.

Well taken in that context yeh of course it's a little hard to follow. I'm not sure what your religious convictions are, but they might affect your opinion of the book. It might not be so much the fact that there was a "V" in the painting as much as Jesus having a wife. I have a pretty open mind regarding such things so I found the book pretty refreshing and entertaining.

Also, the finding a "V" is such a small portion of the book. It's actually used as an example to prove that Jesus may have been married. It wasn't like the founding idea of the book was the finding of the "V". The book is actually a murder mystery, and there just happens to be this encompassing story regarding Da Vinci's paintings and what his message, if any, was through them.

And there are many many things in various stories via movie or book that have pretty absurd things, even more absurd than a "V" in a painting.

It sounds like you've judged a book by it's cover.

I recommend the Aubrey/Maturin Novels by Patrick O'Brian. Great stuff! They're the basis for the "Master and Commander on the Far Side of the World" film.

You get a feel for the wonder of how men came to sail these machines of war around the planet using nothing more than the wind. But they're also very human books, and very funny. When the technical stuff starts in ("Reef the mizzen stay sails") just let it roll over you and keep going. If you really get into it there are some companion books you can get that will explain most of it.

Recommend you start in the middle with "On the Far Side of the World", then back up to the first, "Master and Commander" and take them in order.
